Shockwave Therapy in Brewster, NY for Athletes and Active Adults

A heel that aches through the first mile.

Shockwave therapy performed at PMR in Brewster

A heel that aches through the first mile. A knee tendon that complains on every squat. A shoulder that flares each time you press overhead.

After months of stop-and-start progress, many runners, lifters and weekend athletes look into shockwave therapy. Brewster, NY athletes can get it at Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation of NY & CT (PMR), where our office at 1620 Brewster Town Center uses it as one part of a return-to-sport plan.

Why tendons get stuck, and where shockwave fits

Tendons adapt to training more slowly than muscles. When load jumps too fast, with a new mileage goal or heavier lifts, a tendon can become painful and less able to handle force, a problem called tendinopathy. Rest calms pain but doesn’t rebuild capacity, so symptoms return as you ramp back up.

For shockwave therapy in Brewster, NY, PMR uses radial pressure wave (RPW) therapy, delivered through a handheld applicator. Researchers believe the pulses may stimulate repair and briefly dampen pain, making it easier to keep up the strength work that rebuilds a tendon. Our main shockwave therapy page covers the science.

Tendon problems we see in active people

  • Jumper’s knee (patellar tendinopathy): pain below the kneecap with jumping, squats or stairs
  • Shoulder tendon pain: aching with overhead lifting, throwing or swimming, including calcium deposits in a rotator cuff tendon
  • Achilles tendinopathy: stiffness at the back of the heel, often worst in the morning
  • Plantar fasciitis: sharp heel pain with the first steps of the day

Research support is stronger for calcific shoulder tendinitis and plantar fasciitis than for jumper’s knee, where results have been mixed.

Getting shockwave therapy in Brewster, NY

We start by testing how the tendon handles load with single-leg squats, hops, heel raises or resisted shoulder tests. During treatment, the applicator taps rapidly over skin coated with gel for a few minutes, with intensity set to your tolerance. Expect soreness for a day or so and a short break from hard training on that tendon. Most courses involve a short series of visits.

Training through treatment

Total rest is rarely the answer. Plans usually include:

  • Trimming training volume so the tendon is challenged, not overwhelmed
  • Progressive strength work, from steady holds to slow heavy lifts to faster, sport-specific moves
  • A graded return to running, jumping or lifting, guided by how the tendon feels the next day

Our Brewster chiropractors, Paul Ciatto, DC, and Chris Shay, DC, focus on athletic rehabilitation, strength training and sports injuries. Our on-site gym and sports medicine services support this work, alongside sports injury care for problems beyond tendons.

Is shockwave safe for you?

We won’t use shockwave during pregnancy, over a tumor or infection, or over open growth plates, which matters for younger athletes. Tell us if you take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or have a pacemaker or other implanted device. Insurance often doesn’t cover shockwave, so ask our billing office at (203) 744-8014 about pricing up front.

When to get urgent care

Head to an emergency room, or call 911, for:

  • A pop followed by sudden weakness, such as being unable to push off your foot or lift your arm
  • Severe pain, deformity or inability to bear weight after a fall or collision
  • Fever along with a joint that is hot and swollen

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep training during shockwave treatment?

Usually, yes. Most athletes train at a reduced load, swap some high-impact work for lower-impact options and keep up their strength program. Mild pain during activity that settles by the next morning is often acceptable. Pain that builds from one session to the next means the load needs to come down.

Is shockwave safe for teenage athletes?

Shockwave isn’t used over open growth plates, so it is often avoided in younger teens, depending on the area. For many young athletes, load management and progressive strengthening come first. We’ll explain the options to parents and coordinate with your child’s pediatrician when needed.

What if shockwave doesn’t help?

Not everyone responds. If you aren’t improving after the series, we’ll recheck the diagnosis and your training load, then adjust the plan. That may mean more targeted strength work, other hands-on care or a referral to a sports medicine physician for imaging.
